Use a technical detergent: regular detergents are often made from ingredients helping the water get into the fibers – to ensure a deep cleaning. It is great for regular clothing, but on a technical coat, it will leave a residue and make the fabric more absorptive – which you don’t really want in a waterproof jacket. Go for a technical detergent like Nikwax’s Tech Wash – which will clean your shell and protect the material.

Wash it often: washing your coat more than once over the season will help it keep its technical features. We don’t always notice it, but dust, body oils, dirt and even smoke can easily get into the fibers and make the fabric less breathable. We recommend washing your shell after 5 or 6 uses.

Spot treat: here, your grandmother would probably agree. Never put a piece of clothing in the washer if there are untouched stains on it! The old trick also applies to technical gear. Whether it be a wine or sauce stain (#afterski), don’t hesitate to use a brush and technical soap to remove it before throwing it in the wash.

Dry with caution: here, you have to be careful. On the one hand, heat helps reactivate water-resistance treatments, but on the other hand, too much heat can ruin the fabric. Read the instructions carefully from the tag before doing anything. If it’s not clear, let it dry on low for 20 minutes, and then hang it.

* Always wash your shell before applying a new waterproof treatment on it. Otherwise, dust or residues could stay trapped in the fabric forever!
